Owning a car at university ruins your life x

You might think I'm being dramatic when I say that taking  car to university ruins your life. But there are some serious negatives about it! Yes I love not having to get the bus everywhere and I love not having to lug all of my ridiculous amounts of food shopping back from Asda every week. BUT there's nothing that ruins friendships like only one of the friendship group owning a car.

Firstly, if you own a car, you drive everyone to the supermarket at least once a week. It's like a road trip but literally five minutes down the road and everyone is grumpy on the way home because let's face it, who likes food shopping anyway? Being a broke student just adds to the bad mood. Driving to the supermarket when you want to go is great, until you announce that's where you're going - Asda.  Tom will 'just be five minutes' and then you realise he's in the shower. Whilst Ellie has only just rolled out of bed but insists she will be 'down in 2 mins'. Finally you end up in the supermarket half an hour later and you don't even remember what you need.

It is assumed by every single one of your housemates that you will pick them up from the train station with all their crap no matter what time of day it is. There is no prior warning just that 'I'll be at Temple Meads in 20 mins - can you get me?' I always want to say no but then there the 'I've got like 17 bags and I don't want to have to carry it home on the bus and walk home'. This is when the guilt sets in and so you buckle up and drive to the pick-up point. It's like being the house's personal Uber service.

Then there's the really irritating situations - when Will that you last saw at a house party 6 months ago ask's you for a favour. He need's a lift to somewhere really obscure that there isn't a direct bus to get there. These are the MOST annoying situations. You don't want to be my friend - you're just using me for my car. Leave me alone.

SO the moral of the story is - I love my friends and I care about them and I am a nice person so 99.9% of the time - if they need a lift, I'm there for them. But when people just use you for your car and you realise that people use you as a free taxi - it becomes shit and its NOT okay. Don't use strangers for a lift, it's annoying as fuck.

But having a car is great and I wouldn't dream of living without my little Fifi.
